Alma's Vision for a Sustainable Community

Marsha’s Healing Garden is a one acre natural herb garden at Alma that was designed and lovingly tended to by Marsha Gomez, one of our founding mothers who is no longer with us. Marsha studied the use of indigenous plants in healing for many years, grew a wide variety of medicinal plants in the Alma garden and made various types of medicines from plants harvested from the garden. Marsha mentored many Indigenous youth over the years in the garden. Her vision was to pass on Indigenous knowledge to our youth so that the natural healing ways would not be lost.IWN will continue to honor Marsha’s legacy by ensuring that her vision for the garden is realized. Jane Madrigal, one of the interns who had the privilege to work under Marsha has returned to teach a new generation of Indigenous youth about the garden and the medicines – life has come full circle as it always does. Currently, all of Marsha’s research is being compiled into a compendium that will be made available to the public at the end of this year. Picture of garden and Jane. Organic Vegetable Garden This year we re-established the Alma organic vegetable garden. Alma grew organic vegetables in the past that were used to feed the guests, volunteers and visitors. Once again, those coming to Alma will be served with fresh produce from our mother. IWN have partnered with the Seeds of Change and other local organizations to get the garden re-established. Picture of Jorge and youth Land Management Plan IWN has worked over the years to develop a land management plan that will ensure that Alma lands are managed according to Indigenous environmental practices of protection for mother earth and all that walks upon her.
