EMERGING ACTIVIST LEADERSHIP
PROGRAM
Goal
To provide an opportunity for Indigenous women to hone their
leadership skills through acquiring in depth knowledge of the
issues and practical skills for program development,
fundraising, communications and non profit administration
Overview
Through EALP we select four to six Indigenous women, primarily
youth, each year who have demonstrated leadership and interest
in promoting social change in their community. The focus is on
facilitating a long term relationship between IWN and the
interns whereby IWN provides long term mentorship and both
parties work together toward a better future for our Nations.
The EALP is a powerful device we use to continue “Strengthening
the Circle” and expanding the leadership of Indigenous women.
EALP is a partnership between selected
interns and a recognized group of seasoned activist and mentors,
host sites and foundations and individual contributors that
support EALP. The multiplying effect of this program is
exponential over the years, as the participants become leaders
and ambassadors for the organization, the struggle and the
program.
The Board has reaffirmed its commitment over the last few years
in mentoring Indigenous women leaders through the EALP because
of the alarming decrease in the number of young women entering
the Movement that was initiated in the 1970s. In order to ensure
the continued success of the struggle for sovereignty and
self-determination, it is essential that we identify and
cultivate Indigenous women’s leadership by emerging them in
innovative programming that facilitates passing the knowledge
that we have acquired over the last 20 years. EALP is just the
vehicle to ensure continuity in leadership and to keep our
issues at the forefront with fresh, bold and innovative thinking
Format: The EALP consists of three components:
-
Theoretical grounding
-
Fieldwork
-
